I don't know the answers, but I believe number 3 was the Junkers Ju 52.

Squadron Ldr B. Thank you for being polite enough to try! :) Answers are:

1. What did Australian Wirraway pilots use as sirens when dive bombing Japanese landing barges at Kota Bharu, Malaya in December 1941? (Metal dinner plates turned into the direction of the dive)

2. What British aerial attack did the Japanese emulate when they attacked Pearl Harbour? (Taranto)

3. What German aircraft was used by the Royal Australian Air Force in World War II? (Dornier Do24 - formerly of the Netherlands East Indies Air Force)

4. What Japanese fishing vessel did Australian commandos use to raid the Japanese held Port of Singapore in September 1942? (Kofuku Maru - renamed MV Krait. It is preserved at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney)

5. Lieutenant Edgardo Simoni (La Volpe) was one of the great escape artists of World War II. He as captured in a cafe fairly soon after his first escape. What menu mistake gave away his nationality and status? (He ordered wine with his meal. The cafe owners immediately rang the police)

Hmm, very interesting. I think I've heard about the Pearl Harbour Taranto thing before.

I've always found the Edgardo Simoni story amusing. Back then Australians drank very little wine. After various escape attempts Simoni was sent to Hay Gaol, the Colditz of the Australian prisoner of war camp system. He escaped after spending months sawing through the cast iron bars of his cell with a shoelace. After escaping he found his way through the Low Bidgee Flood Plain and eventually reached Mildura on the Murray River. Italian families there sheltered him and smuggled him to Melbourne where he go a job as a vacuum cleaner salesman. in 1944 he won an award as salesman of the month!
