I know there are a good few of you who love a good argue on this place. So let's have a debating society shall we?

Rules:

  • You'll get picked to go head to head with another member.
  • You have to argue the point you are given.
  • The point you have to argue will be assigned to you and related to historical events.
  • Keep it civil. No insults of the blunt and crude variety. Members are asked to exercise discretion.
  • I will be the referee/speaker of the house/umpire/whatever you want to call it.
  • A winner will be declared when one of the following conditions is met; One of the members admits defeat; One of the members does not reply for a period of 36 hours; The Speaker of the House/referee-person-thing deems one of the members to be defeated due to offering no significant or coherent argument. If no winner is obvious by the end of the allotted time, it will be put to a vote on the part of the members.
  • Members are asked to address each other respectfully.

Ask any questions if you want. Reply if you want to sign up. You'll be added to the members' list. The first debate will be announced on Friday night.

I don't see why it shouldn't. It's a civil debate, not one of those unsophisticated arguments we keep getting. It should be both informative and entertaining. And since you won't always be arguing your own opinion, people aren't going to be at each others' throats.

I'm not honourable and I'm certainly no gentleman, thus I shouldn't be referred to as such. Other than that, I'll sign up.

(Seriously, we're not MPs and we aren't in the House of Commons so there's no need for the "must refer to one another as The Honourable Gentleman/Lady" rule.)

War does not determine who is right, only who is left - Bertrand Russell

I write things, things which can be found in Historical Discussions. Things like this article on the Soviet invasion of Manchuria in 1945 and this article on the Spanish Civil War.

I, as a representative of the working people, can agree to that.

If it involves arty and skill in the same sentence, count me in.

It'll only really be historical matters. Still in?

No, that may cause issues with some people of the more anti-communist stance (you all know who you are). :P

Negative. We need to say it in Russian.

I might be interested, but I am far too busy at the moment. Why don't you have Crazedtiger and Uranprojekt have a go at each other, and I'll see if I'm still interested when exams are done with.

I'd also say that it would be best to tell people what they would be arguing well in advance, as I presume that some amount of research will be required.

Not necessarily. One of the rules is to keep it civil.
