Dr Bodge's Guide to Abbey (Basic)

While this map is limited corridor style map, with some opportunities for mobile, lightly armoured tanks. Difficult to cap due to open capture zones allows for unexpected wins by the defending side. One major tactical red-herring (East flank).

Good for: Heavy tanks and well armoured TDs (assault guns). Plentiful hard cover and short view ranges can provide good hunting for autoloaders.

Bad for: Scouts and Sniping tanks.

West

The game usually consists of a large force on each side pushing the West valley area, which normally determines the outcome of the game. The fighting generally consists of a side-scraping and slugging match suitable for well armoured tanks with good penetration.

East

A secondary push is often made along the West edge, but this is a much less important area and only worth fighting for to deny it to the opposition. Most appropriate for the defensive minded if otherwise unguarded or mid-tier players who want to avoid the West flank.

Abbey

Unchallenged control of the centre of the map can be very useful, as there are occasional firing opportunities to both flanks. Taking the Abbey and remaining there can be risky though.

Camping

The sniping is generally poor, unless the opposition are unwise enough push through the middle. As is so often the case, if the camping is good it is because your team are losing.

Thanks, this map always confuses me. Take the West makes sense. I will try to support the West side

However, when you see only one medium heading to the West, it brings back the question, should I do what's 'right' or try to survive longer?

Whoa, an oldie but a goldie. Dr.Bodge does some great stuff.

Personally I've found going West on your own or with just one other is ill advised as you'll typically find four or five Opfor coming the other way and unless you're very, very good (I'm very not that) will just get steam-rolled.

With three or four others though, it's good.

Dr. Bodge rocks!

Lots of opportunities in the middle for sneaky Light Tanks. The vicinity of E F 3 4 is often overlooked by the Reds.

I love Light Tanks

Cool write ups, it should be mandatory for all players to read the write ups after a couple games haha

I've had two mastery badges sniping E/F 6/7 at low tiers. It doesn't work at higher tiers, the fight takes place around the edges of the map as you've stated.

Wow! How did this get into GD?

Don't forget the Intermediate Guides though (Abbey). I think they are much more interesting and were certainly more challenging to write.

Did you modify that guide after they changed the map?

The east has become more important now and I experience the west isn't always the natural combat zone any longer (it's still the major battle zone, but east has caught up a bit).

Hi Rubbelito,

No. Sorry. Once it become clear that there was only lukewarm interest I gave up making the maps and haven't been back to revise them since then (the last updated time was March '06). To be honest I haven't had time to play WoT for some months now so I didn't even know Abbey had changed.

Sorry to hear that.

Not sure why the cool interest. Every new player (and many old) should read your posts (incl map guides).

Anyway, there's an image of the new version in this thread (just in case...lol):
