FV4201 Chieftain Mk. 6

-Aschenblume

Hello! Its me! Here to bring a new guide on a new tank that people seem to be confused by and am here to clear things up. Forget Quickybaby he doesn't know anything other than to be a scrub. So lets begin on my new favorite tier ten British "heavy" tank.

Chieftain's history:

The FV4201 Chieftain was the main battle tank of the United Kingdom during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. It was the "most formidable main battle tank in the world" at the time of its introduction in 1966, with the most powerful main gun and most effective armour of any tank yet made.[4][not in citation given] This was further improved while in service with Chobham armour upgrades.

A development of the Centurion, the Chieftain introduced the supine (reclining backwards) driver position to British design, enabling a heavily sloped hull with reduced height. A new powerpack and improved transmission gave it higher speed than the Centurion, in spite of a major upgrade to armor protection and the armament. It remained in service until replaced by the Challenger 1, which shared a large number of the Chieftain's features.

How to Chieftain:

First things first, yeah it has a heavy icon and it is in the British heavy line but it's not a heavy. In truth it's a medium who ate too many biscuits and has a lot of health. The why is because it gets ammo rekted with every shot in the weak azz hull (even with safe stowage). You thought the Leopard 1 had an ammo rekt problem? Think again. So with that established we can figure out this heavy... shite I mean medium.

When spawned into the game look at your team lists and what other tanks the enemy has. Where you wanna position yourself is with the other mediums and to as many hull down spots as possible. Help your mediums with supporting fire; your greatest strength is your gun so you have to keep it singing. Be sure to track and retrack people's drive wheels as much as possible. The 42 KPH is enough to keep up with the pace of the battle but beware of the ground resistances as the power to weight ratio is rather mediocre; I suggest offroad king early on.

When not in hull down position be mindful that most shots in your weak azz hull will ammo rekt you, so plan a route accordingly. What I like to do when rushing at someone head on is to do zig zag maneuvers to hopefully screw up his shots into my tracks.

When hull down always be sure to never sit still and waggle your turret. 6 times out of 10 when someone shoots your hatch it will only damage the viewports. So waggling and not sitting still only improves those odds. And it's always a good idea to try and bait their shots.

Beware of arties and broken azz TDs as they will be your largest threat. A lot of my carries were ended by some potato in a Deathstar one shotting me. Since it has such a weak hull it's a prime target for arty that and the "new tank" syndrome. But I digress, its best when hull down is to back away from your spot in between shots erratically. Or when driving around spotted and you know arty is looking; be sure to drive unpredictably (zig zag) so when you get hit on the move at 42kph there is no "You were driving predictably" excuse from WG worshipists.

Perks: Immediately get the big three as soon as possible: Repairs, BiA, and Six Sense. After which get safe stowage and offroad king. After that get what you want.

Equipment:

Gun Rammer (Need)

Vert stabs (need)

Vents (Need)

Optics (optional)

GLD (optional but not really necessary if you already have vert stabs.)

Consumables:

Shell load outs.

APDS L15A4- 40 shells

APDS L15A4 DU- 17 shells (be aware the premium APDS isnt all that spectacular from the regular but is good for E5s, E3s, E100 and Maus turrets.)

HESH L31- 7 shells - AMAZING HESH PEN. 140mm perfect for arty, waffles, Leopard 1s, and BatChats.

Repair kits large or regular your choice.

Medic kits large or regular your choice.

Fire Extinguisher if you wish you can trade out for tea and pudding because with vents, BiA, and Tea my reload is down to 6.53 seconds. and the aim time is less than a second. I personally haven't been set on fire very much and if I am set on fire I have firefighting perk. Your choice.

Fun fact: Chieftain has 10 meters less view range than the Conqueror.

For the three markers. The damage required is actually pretty low at the moment it's only around 4.3-4.6K which isnt hard at all. Im breezing right through mine.

I think thats most of it. If I forgot something I will update it and if anyone has a question PM me or leave a post. I am more active with the PM though as I wont always check these guides every day.

Good luck, Go Out there and defeat her Majesty's enemies for the glory of Britannia.

The chieftain is too awesome. Just waiting for it to get nerfed now.

This will be the first tier 10 heavy I go for, I play mostly mediums and lights but the gun handling on the chieftain is so good compared to other tier ten heavies. I must have it. Great job on the guide and thanx

Obviously it's better to not get hit, but what are the merits of a wet ammo rack vs. vents? Especially for the average player. (Dont have it myself, just curious)

The grind has never been more tense to get it before the whine induced nerf.

I haven't used wet ammo rack at all yet but am contemplating switching it.

If this tank was to be nerfed before the TD's there would be an uproar.

well vents has to do with crew skills, gives you a 5% bonus. Wet ammo rack would help, but if you have safe stowage as a perk, you don't really need it

For the average player, I'd personally go with the rack but if you are playing without it and don't get crippling damage frequently then skip it.

I've heard it said that if one needs a wet rack in a Leopard 1 they are not playing it properly. The Chieftain however is a heavy tank, it is meant to engage directly to some degree. Part of the job of the heavy tank is to help the team absorb damage. If your rack is damaged early, unlike the Leopard who can at least still assist the team by using it's camo, mobility, and view range, you become essentially unable to contribute to the team in a meaningful way, along with being unable to improve personal stats efficiently.

Safe Stowage adds 32 ammo rack HP.  A wet rack adds 130 HP. And if you use your repair kit on a damaged rack, good luck when you get tracked and the enemy starts lighting you up because you carelessly poked your nose around the corner into the hornet's nest.

Considering a scenario in the Chieftain where BIA is an equipped skill, Vents will make the following improvements -

View range: 398 to 406m

Aim time: 1.41 to 1.38 secs

Accuracy: .30 to .29

Reload Speed: 7.74 to 7.57 secs

Ground resistance: 1.97 to 1.93

Hull traverse: 42.6 to 43.6 deg

Gun traverse: 32 to 32.7 deg

Camouflage: insignificant unless Camo skill is equipped, then 10.87 to 11.06
