I'll try to keep the whining to a minimum here but I wish someone could explain what the heck I am doing wrong with in my STA-1. From what I have heard, one can maintain a 40% win rate by simply AFKing in a tank. I am struggling to maintain a 40% in the thing. My average win rate is 52% and monthly is 55% just to let you know that I don't suck in all of my tanks. Just today, I had 5 horrible losses in a row in the STA-1. I'm talking losses where we get steamrolled.

Taking the STA-1 out is getting to be a guaranteed loss. I would almost consider hooking up with 4 unicum players in a platoon just to prove the thing is cursed. I have the STA-2 and I love the thing but the STA-1 just has bad mojo. I've decided that I will now run combat rations and spam nothing but premo and bleed out silver and yet I still have terrible games in it.

I have played a few other tanks that I just didn't like and didn't do well in  (Sturer Emil, M3 Lee, Challenger). But those tanks I knew I wouldn't like. The STA-1 is the type of tank I like and usually do well in but it just won't let me do it.

I'm pretty sure I know how to play it. Avoid getting hit at all costs and move around. Sort of like I play my Hellcat. If I see someone getting close I drop back. The problem is eventually I have no room left to back up and my team is all dead. I hate to blame it on my teams but having a win rate lower than 40% seems like is only possible if I go out and troll my entire team which I of course do not.

Any ideas on this?

It gets a little better once fully upgraded.

It's been fully upgraded for quite a while. No matter how far back I go, I'm always spotted first. Something has got to be screwed up because all of my heavies seem to do a better job staying undetected than this thing. I'll be hiding behind a bush while the rest of our team is just shooting away and moving a hundred meters in front of me and guess who gets shot at first?

I'm loving this tank more than I expected to. I'll try to setup more in ambush/ flankin/ opportunistic positions and not tackling the front lines head on. I don't tend to get spotted easily but as soon as my sixth sense goes on, I'm getting into cover, sometimes not risking taking  a shot. Don't be the first one to be seen. I'll abuse hills at every opportunity and make use of gun depression.
I'm not finding a huge need to use many prem rounds and not using combat rations.

STA-1 is much better than the STA-2. Equip a gun rammer, vertcal stab. and vents. Use the rate of fire to support your team and, given the chance, flank your enemies with your maneuverability.

Grinding: T32, Firefly, Tortoise, Ru 251(1), Jagdtiger, AMX 13 75; Elite: M4A3E8, T29(2), Centurion 7/1(1), Centurion AX, Churchill VII(3), Conqueror(1), FV215b, Chieftain, FV304, Pz. IVH,(1) Tiger P(1), Tiger(1), Tiger II(1), Maus, Ferdinand(1), ELC AMX(1), MT-25(1), KV-2, IS(1), IS-3(1), IS-7, STA-1(2), STB-1; Premium: T1E6-X, T7 Car, T1E6-X1, Locust, M41B Brazil, Ram II, T14, Knight(3), Boilermaker, TOG II*(1), FV4202 (P), Centennial(1), Pz. 38H, Pz. IID, Pz. IIJ, Aufkl. Panther(1), Pz. V/IV, Kraft's Panther, Pz. B2, Hammer, E-25, AMX CDC, T-127 , BT-SV, T-34-88, Motherland, KV-5(1). (*) MoE.

I am grinding this tank and don't yet have the top gun. I hated it until I started playing it as a scout. It's speed and size become an advantage.

This tank is fantastic. I just unlocked the Type 61 last night, but i'll keep playing my STA-1 to overtrain my crew. As for the play style, you should be taking advantage of the gun depression. Work ridge lines, hide behind the heavy tanks. You also have some speed that you can use to flank. What i like to do is wait a bit to see where everyone in the team goes to and then decide where i should go.

I play it like a light tank most the time.

It's got a decent turret, good pen and very good camo (for a med) but, it's accuracy isn't the best. I stick to hills where I can hull down and support and remain somewhat unseen. I've got it 2 marked, but can say it's not an amazing tier VIII medium. A little more mobility and it would be fantastic.

I'm hoping the final package helps, but it's still gonna feel like a CDC that's been on a sumo diet. I call it the Hibachi as it seems to catch fire everytime anyone looks at it. Thinking of switching something out for vents to help the gun handling, looks good on paper but in reality it's not so good.

The final gun is really nice. It's not for everyone, but it really is a good tank...so much so that I put in a ticket to get it back after I went up the line to the STB-1. I haven't had many fire issues with it, but arty does like to hone into you because it's a soft target...just gotta try to keep moving since that is where it excels anyway...it does not brawl well at all.

The mediocre depression on the early turret is what's killing it for me the most right now. Makes me have to expose myself too much.

Leverage it's decent camo until you get the top package.

Will do, once Wargaming figures out there's maps other than Ghost Town & Ensk.

Yeah...I don't have many "vocal gripes" about the game, but I do think there has to be a better way to rotate maps...and fix the repair wheel.

Wow, I didn't think final package would make much difference but it's a huge difference. Still not very fast but that extra view range and gun depression has helped immensely. Don't know if I'll hold onto it but it's a pretty good tank now if I keep my distance. It even sorted out the map rotation somehow. /tin foil hat

My STA-1 must be the one broken then because the map rotation is not my friend.

Ensk & all Ensk variants need to be removed from rotation for a month or so. That's how often I'm getting them and it's always when I'm in something with particle board for armor. These small urban corridor maps are way too frequent.
