Tier 4 is an interesting place on the tech trees that marks the end of the nearly universal "Bad tanks", with tier 5 bringing tanks like the M4 Sherman, the StuG III, and the AT 2. But which of the tanks stand out at tier 4 as being better than their competition? Since there are 5 classes of vehicles, I will give you the
5 4 best tanks of tier 4:
The best "Light" Tank:
The Pz. III. What's that you say? The Pz. III is a medium tank not a light tank? Exactly why its so great! Not being a light tank, the Pz. III doesn't get scout matchmaking like the Pz. 38 N.a (t) or the M5 Stuart do. Moreover, the Pz. III is just as fast as any light tank, being able to reach almost 60 kph on a flat surface. It also has great frontal armour that is almost comparable to the tier 5 Panzer IV at 70 mm thick. You have two strong guns to choose between, a short-barreled howitzer like 7.5 cm, and a long 5 cm. The 7.5 has better alpha damage, but the 5 cm offers semi-reliable damage, and has better dpm than the 7.5 cm does. The Pz. III is quite strong at countering enemy scouts, just as fast as them, but with more reliable armour, and weighing about 50% more than they do lets you ram them to death with little repercussion.
The best "Heavy" tank:
No tier 4 heavy tanks you say? I present to you the Matilda. The Matilda is very slow for a medium tank, but it has very strong armour, and a very strong gun. While the 2-pounder's damage may be low, it can fire almost once every 2 seconds (with the best crew of course), giving you reliable dpm. Furthermore, the 2-pounder's penetration wouldn't be found lacking on a tier 5 tank, let alone a tier 4.
The best tank destroyer:
Actually being a tank destroyer this time, the Hetzer is my choice for the best tier 4 tank destroyer. While its view range is somewhat lacking compared to the T40, both have a nearly identical 105 mm howitzer, and both a very similar 75 mm gun (with the T40's having a small advantage), the Hetzer has 2 key advantages over the T40. First, the Hetzer has much better camouflage than the T40 does, the Hetzer is a much more sneaky machine. Secondly, in the event that you are spotted, the Hetzer's armour is much stronger than the T40's armour. While the T40 is an open-topped square box of a tank, the Hetzer has extremely well sloped armour, making its nominal armour thickness of 60 mm frontal armour much more like 80-90 mm of frontal armour compared to the T40's 51 mm of frontal armour
best Medium tank second-best tank destroyer:
The M3 Lee. You all will look at this and laugh and laugh and laugh. How can the M3 Lee be good? I will explain to you what makes the M3 Lee good. 2200 damage-per-minute. What is the damage-per-minute of most other tier 4 tanks? The tank destroyers have the best guns for the tier, and the Hetzer and T40's damage-per-minutes are about 1700 and 1900 respectively. Now what does the M3 Lee's huge dpm advantage actually mean? Say you have an M4 Sherman come upon an M3 Lee. (The Sherman will be using the 76 mm M1A1, not the howitzer). Both of you fire at the same time. The Sherman has 350 hp, the Lee 295 hp. In 3 seconds, the Lee has reloaded and fired. The Sherman now has 240 hp. 1.2 seconds after that, the Sherman fires again bringing the Lee to 180 hp. 1.8 seconds later, the Lee completes another reload cycle and fires again at the Sherman brining it down to 130 hp. The Sherman still has to wait for another 2.4 seconds to fire at the Lee again bringing it down to 15 hp. However, the Lee is ready to fire 0.6 seconds later, and is able to fire another round at the Sherman 3 seconds after that, killing the Sherman. As you can see, a dpm advantage of almost 600 hp/min over the M4 Sherman (using the 76 mm M1A1) allows the M3 Lee to outfight a tank a tier higher than it. Since the Lee is very vulnerable close up, the necessary use of this tank is from a distance as a tank destroyer. You are a very fragile machine, but your huge dpm will let you melt enemy tanks from a distance.
