Congrats to my fellow peeps that made Grand Master! It took me 160 battles with 70% winrate to get in.

Sorry in advance for the wall of text Rai, but I want to get my thoughts out since I really want to see ranked battles improve and succeed.

 

First I want to say that I really enjoyed ranked battles. I love the challenge of trying to get points and move up the leagues. It's very reminiscent of MOEs - every match you're trying your best to maximize the points you'll gain, and minimize the points you'll lose. I like that there is a focus on winning.

 

The 7 vs 7 format is a nice change of pace. The game plays differently. Each player has more weight, being a seventh of the team instead of a fifteenth, meaning my contribution matters so much more than in random battles. There is a stark contrast in the ranked battle W/R of 70% compared to my typical W/R of 58% (recent 61%). I can impact the battle more than ever. It's also interesting that the maps play so much differently with only 14 people on the board. Team deployment and taking key locations has never been so important. Supporting your team has also never been so important. All these subtle difference make a very unique experience and I think that's wonderful.

 

The player base was different too. There were way more people playing to win, and a huge increase communication. Obviously there are still the stinkers out there who are dead silent or do nothing but yell, but I think the increase in players talking strategy and trying to work together overshadowed it. It even got me to turn my mic on, and I always have it off.

 

Things I think need to change:

1. Longer Time Frame.

I understand that the small 3 day long window makes it a rare and special event, increasing the population playing ranked battles, and I know that making it last too long will dry up the population and interest in ranked battles. However, 3 days is way to short. Not everybody has as much time as I did to dump into ranked battles. Some people probably had little to no opportunity to play. With such a small time frame, the chances of people to make it into higher leagues is too tiny. When people know they can't play enough to rank up, they stop playing all together. If the whole point is to move up and down leagues and divisions, but you can't even do that, why bother playing in the first place? Edit: Maybe if seasons were 2 weeks long, and happened quarterly?

 

2. Better Incentives.

Speaking of "why bother playing?", who wants to play when there is no reason to? Sure there are people like me who enjoy the challenge, but there aren't that many of us. And even then, I won't be sticking around in ranked battles much longer if I'm not given a good reason to. The competitive charm has already worn off for me. Players need something to work towards, and silver rewards are not going to cut it. Do you know how many of us made it to Grand Master? 8! And the guy that did it in the least amount of battles still needed to play 150! And we get 1,000,000 silver. I can do that in 10 to 20 battles in one of the tier 8 premiums we got for free through earn ops.  What about the 750,000 silver at Chief Master? When I was in that league there was <15 of us. 500,000 for Senior Master? <50 when I was in it. Anything less than that is basically nothing compared to time invested, and even the few of us who got 500,000+ didn't get much for the amount of effort put in. The people who made it that far are the better players who already have lots of progress in this game, and 500,000 is not going to mean much to them.

 

Ranked battles could be a perfect platform for premium rewards, like the earnable premium hero tanks. Gold or premium time would be okay. Or something completely new like unique camo, emblems, or inscriptions that unlock depending on what league you made it to. Or! What about the tier 10 tanks like the M60, VK 72.01, Obj. 260, T-22, etc.

 

3. Improved Leaderboard.

It would be nice if you could show the amount of points each player has on the leaderboard, so we can gauge how many more we need to outdo each other. The whole point of ranked battles is competition after all, right? I found this to be especially true at Grand Master since you can no longer progress up divisions, or to another league. I would have loved to compete with the other guys and gals in that league for first, but without knowing how many points I had or how many points they had, I didn't know if I even had a chance or not, or how long it could take, so I just stopped playing. Very anti-climatic.

 

4. Some transparency on the point system would be nice. A detailed explanation of what determines your point gain/loss somewhere in game would be fantastic. A lot of people seem to be upset with the point system and I think some transparency would go a long way.

 

One last request: Would it be possible to maybe release some stats on ranked battles? Like what you do during in game competitions. How many people in each league, most played tanks, etc. Maybe for the next battle hero news article? Could be interesting!

 

It was disappointing to me that this first season had no improvements over the two betas other than tweaking the point system. Hope this feedback actually helps in some way, I'd really like ranked battles to be the best it can be.

After the last Ranked Games, I didn't even bother with this one.  There's not much incentive to play it.  No new medals for the medal chasers.  And honestly, I make more silver just playing regular matchmaking.  I know other games that have Ranked PvP usually have unique items that can only be obtained from playing ranked matches.  Something like this would go a huge way into improving participation.  But you gotta keep the rewards unique to ONLY ranked matches.  That's where these other games fell short.  They have these unique items, then just put recolored versions of the same thing out for purchase a month or two later.  After that, Ranked PvP became a joke.  No one wanted to play it anymore, because they could just wait a month and get the same thing, only easier.  Maybe a unique "account wide unlock" camo pattern, inscription, emblem, or even tank that you can only obtain through Ranked PvP games?  I think something like that would be more worthwhile.  Getting a reward that you can also get through normal game play isn't a "unique reward" at all.

maybe i would be cool if you got a permanent emblem, like the 123 years emblem. this would be a gold 2 emblem if you reached that, or a platinum3 etc etc....

perhaps make it only visible/replace emblem when playing ranked games. that way we can also see how other fair in the ranked system

Earning points became extremely difficult the higher we got. A single loss could take 5 wins to undue the point loss. To make money at the end, I had to use mostly standard ammo or bleed sliver, so no spamming prem, just when needed (my prem RNG during the event was terrible and I had better luck with the standards penning).  50% wins never would have done the trick as I was also at the top of most of my teams and would often make 2 - 8 points on wins as I reached higher leagues and lose 40 point for 1st loser. 

 

If you think it was easy for the 7 or so of us that got to the top, know that it was not, we played our absolute best to get there. I think most people don't realize that they haven't actually learned how to play this game, I'm sure your not one of those people, you just sound like one.  Just  generally.

Unappealing. I participated on both tests, but once confirmed that oficial ranked battles' matchmaking doesn't take rank into consideration, I lost interest in them. On this season, I classified and played 2 additional battles on the first day, but nothing more.

 

With this philosophy, nothing differentiates ranked from multiplayer battles. If I want to play with afkers, kids grinding tanks and drunken players, I'm better at multiplayer matches. There I can play whatever tank I want and get operations done.

 

Nothing positive to say, because Wargaming decided to create a mode for everyone to compete, instead of a mode for those who want to compete.

it's needs to be done on personal contribution, wins isn't a fair way to gauge alone but should still be incorporated into points earned

and how can you put up for emergency maintenence and expect not to give them something as compensation, they went down in prime time whilst I'm running premium N nowt back, when it was because you messed up the ranked battles, which should b 7 over 10 as at least with 7 when you get a .... less decent player being selfish you can still stand a chance at winning, but we only got a day and a half of that, it's been announced for ages, come on, I always defend you guys when people moan about tanks and free stuff but this took the biscuit, what gives??

Things I liked:

Tier limit. It make me run some stuff I had not run in a while and also made for an even game.

7v7 really changed the flow of the game and sped things up. The downside is that, with 7v7, it was a real disadvantage to take a more specialized class like artillery, light or glass cannon TD. With a small team, flexibility was really critical.


 

Things I didn't like. With all that I played, there was nothing that I felt like I won or was working for. It would have been nice to have something to show for it. +1 for the crew XP idea.

​Be nice if we just was to get what we get if anything. Play the game to enjoy, be competitive when needed and help others enjoy and play the game, you know communicate or did you not get a headset yet. Oh right cost money....dag nap it always need gold and then more..oh I already said that..yeah gold.. besides tearing up tier in 1 hour with the saved XP. Plain simple enjoy the game stats suck. win ratio crappy, but played 100% of my games, I enjoy this game simply put, Well do I get anything for this plug guys. hint hint

The prizes weren't good for me to keep playing, I kept bouncing between div 3 and 2 in the master league. I got bored and stopped trying because the reward wasn't high enough. I was hoping for an extra 0 on all the rewards. Smaller immediate rewards should be added at each new league jump.

There should be two ranked tourneys, one tiers 5&6 and the other tiers 7&8. They could alternate or be simultaneous.

Lastly, please display my league rank in standard multiplayer matches, as a badge of honor if you will.

World of warships has a much better tourney.
