There is a consensus among some streamers that if you can't reach maximum view range with optics, crew skills, vents etc then you should pick binos instead. I now think that this is wrong.

I had been following that for a long time and was surprised how rarely I would ever get benefit from binoculars. You can't spot aggressively, you often get outspotted without getting having time for the binos to kick in and they suck for general late game yolo.

I even made the mistake of using binos on stuff like the Conway and Foch. As soon as I switched to optics everything went much better for me. Even stuff like the PZ V/IV seems to benefit way more from optics despite pitiful base view range.

TLDR

Imo Binos are useless on most maps for most vehicles classes. They are obselete equipment with a few minor exceptions. Optics are almost always the better option even if you can't reach the maximum 445m view range.

Binos are awesome.

You'll know when you should use them.

I use binos on support flankers, anything that I will be playing from a distance.   I put optics on tanks where I'll find myself near the front lines more and running the field.

For example, I have bino's on my M18 Hellcat and optics on my Chaffee.

Really depends on what you're using Binos on.  Something big and slow, with a big gun, like T34 or Tiger II where you can support teammates from a distance, or most TDs for examples.  Optics for whatever you plan to be mobile in.

But what else will I spot my own targets with while eating away at camo in the WT IV?

Binos are awesome at low to mid tiers....they tend to lose effectiveness at high tiers since the base view range is already very high, and it's easy to reach max range without Binos.

Binos are pretty much a requirement for all of my low and mid-tier medium (and a few heavy) tanks.

I play for fun, not for stats. But I always play to WIN!!!      Now go check my stats.....HA!!!

I wll definitely agree with useless, On the V/lV. Way to aggressive of a tank for binos. If your running binos on it, Your far from reaching its potential. Only thing I put binos on are tds, Couple of lights. Maybe a slow sniping medium or two. (Panther, Panther8.8)

Binoculars are great on scouts and snipers.

Don't use binocs on any lights except the ELC. All of my other lights use optics.

Your equipment should compliment your tank. Binos on anything that isn't a Light/Artillery/TD is really just wasted.

Binoculars combo well with the camonet. This generally makes your detection range smaller then your view range

The Tiger II has TD level accuracy of 0.31 and base viewrange of 400. This means you can use it as a spotter/sniper on some of the more open maps with binos.

I'll accept that as low tier, but if you are high tier, that is a potatoe.

I don't know about that.... though Id recommend using binocs for the heavy, I guess his set up is fine.

It's not binocs, it's camping spawn against tier 6s I don't like.

Using binos does not mean you're necessarily a camper. You could rush to a good vantage point with a good view of some open terrain for example, like the beach area on Overlord or the Canyon left of the south spawn on South Coast for example.

I like Binocs for turreted things that rely on not being shot to live, which are pretty much only TDs. They can get into position keep the Binocs and Camo Net up while still having the ability to aim in any direction. I don't take them for case mate TDs anymore because I always find myself having to adjust aim and losing Binocs and Camo Nets. And every other tank type is moving too much to make use of them.

I hope to one day be wealthy enough to be considered eccentric rather than just plain nuts.

I use bino's on most light tanks if they are passive scouts. optics on active scouts/ mediums

There is much strange feed back in this thread... :sceptic:

Binos are great for scouting tanks (lights, mediums and some TD's)

Tiger II support tank? idk about that.
