I think it would have died by now if it was a paid game.  I doubt it would have drummed up a large enough player base to keep it going

Good question.

If WoT was a $40-$60 dollar game... I'd probably have never played it!  I'm too cheap.  Meanwhile, $145 later I'm lovin' this 'free' game.

Same here. I would never started playing if it hadn't been free to do so

'World of Tanks, hum can be fun, but do I need the money for something else...? I've to think about that.'

Not sure about the impact of the game not being free on quality or number of micro-transactions even on number of players in a medium/long term view.

Being free surely made it have a lot more players on a short term.

Difficult to answer a 'what if...?' btw.

EA fifa for example, same £40 game every September, and they make millions selling fifa points to people trying to pack messi or ronaldo, You've got more chance winning the lottery.

Im so glad a corporation like them dont own WG, I imagine it would be like that.

Also would they do what WG did with the gold, hell no, You'd be lucky to get an untradeable pack

As the others said - if it was paid at the beginning, I wouldn't start it. And now... about $200 later for this so called "free" game - I'm still here.

For a chance at fair game play? Helllllll yah!  I would gladly pay to buy the game or pay a monthly subscription fee if it meant no more software manipulation turning the tanks into tin and aluminum foil and pitting you against 2 tiers higher.  http://forum-console...t-quit-playing/

It is a paid game for me.  The most expensive paid game I've ever played.

It may not have started as one, but it seems to have become one.

As everyone else said, is a paid game, at least for me. An expensive one - I've spent more on this game than I did when I bought my console, lol.

Its also my most played game ever, leaving GTA V behind months ago.

I mean, I played a lot of Forza too - maybe if I add Forza 3 and 4... Nah, I think I've played WoT more than those 2 combined.

GTA IV and V? Hmmmm... maybe... If I add the Red Dead Redemption... Than definitely. But as a stand alone game, WOT is by far my most played and expensive.

Since there's no goal to achieve (I mean, I've seen players with 5k matches on the Loltracktor alone, 17k overall), no reason to stop playing. Anyone can decide what's its own goal within the game.

Some want to unlock all the tanks. Some others want not only to unlock them all, but also own every single tank in the game.

Others want all the premium tanks. A few will try to 3-mark every tank they ever played. Others only want to play tier X, and so on.

Since there is no end, anyone can set their own goal and go for it.

I got most of the TT tanks I wanted, and I don't have enough time to play them all. Maybe when I grow tired of them, I'll pick other lines to grind.

So, if it was a "paid" game, it would've probably be dead by now, with empty servers, like FarCry3 (wonderful game, but no one plays it anymore, at least on line).

History by now.

Look how many other games  titles have been released in WoT consoles lifetime and have died a death.

WG doesn't force people to pay anything to play the game, people do that by choice. What you do pay for makes aspects of the game easier,  not exclusive or OP.

first, every nation would be a different "Expansion Pack"

Maps would be locked behind the same expansion-packs or DLCs

other content would be longer in the making, if they only got a single large Cash influx upon Game Release, and then nothing else afterwards (besides occasional camo/emblem microtransactions)

And yeah, many folks just wouldn't have bought it in the first place with a large entry fee/price, which is disappointing considering those same people are MORE than OK with paying 10x and more that same price in microtransactions

Yeah EA in general are the worst. Fifa, Madden, even UFC are like that. They try to squeeze every penny out of people on a whole new level compared to WG. Its really fortunate that EA doesn't control WOT.

that's how i justified my first couple of purchases with WoT:

since 2005 i have bought every Madden, DLC pack, etc. each year for generally $59 (but these last couple of years it was $74 and dont forget that EA access crap) and literally played them 20, maybe 30 times or until i was rolled like a cheap [edited]by some 12 year old online.  every year i go through this, my buddies "Madden's out! git after it!" and we get it and our teams end up sucking and we lose interest and never play it just takes up hard drive space; not to mention it gets more and more complex and i'm just not a great console gamer.  so unless you can stand to look at Tom Brady and the Pats without losing your lunch (which i cant) then Madden just isn't fun anymore.

So i figured i would channel that $$ and maybe eat @ home a little more, not meet at the bar every friday and Saturday, watch the games at the house and voila!  i've got a substantial sum sitting in my pocket and can feel good about a game i'll continue to play for some time.  the graphics are amazing, the play style is engaging, it's challenges you in many ways and the technical nature is enthralling, just reading these boards i learn something new and the list keeps growing.

i have an 8 skill soviet crew (i know, i'm a noob but thank you Fatherland OP!) so i'm definitely tempted in that mega pack and have about 2/3rds of the prems already so i'd get some gold back and then there's some german tanks i really want in the other but i'm going to have to convince myself for that.  and i get them @ 45% off rather than full price individually.

This is the 1st year I've given fifa a miss, and not bothered with getting premium for a bf game, only played it a few times, I wanted a remake of ww2.

Them games you're forced to spend money, with wot, its 'free to play' and the choice is yours if you want to spend money.

How long has wot been out, I used played the pc version years ago, but stopped because my pc was shite, was chuffed when it came to ps4

I do pay a monthly subscription

it's called Xbox live

I wouldn't have live at all if this game didn't require it
