Yep pretty terrible. Never thought too much about till I met a guy who was there and he told me it was a setup. The Japanese ambassador sat in wait for 12 hrs trying to deliver a treaty - never received. The newer ships happened to be out of port, convenient disposal of the older fleet. Everyone was on sort of liberty and when observation posts across the island rang the alarm .... they were told to stand down. Officially they say there was a transport plane formation expected.... so why no verification? Great reason to get involved in ww2 and perfect timing Germany was in retreat, China had finally stopped fighting each other enough to focus on the Japanese.....
