So, just picked up the KV-1 and KV-1S. Both are very enjoyable, but was wondering if I should stick with the 85mm (KV-11 package), or do people have better success with the 57mm (KV-57M1 package)? Seems the higher pen (premium), rate of fire, and reduced dispersion may make it more viable against tier 7's. Alternatively, what about the 122mm? Does anyone run the 122mm on the KV-1S?

About KV-1, both guns are quite reliable. Depends way more on your gaming style, but i can personally prefer to use the 85mm, specially having the KV-1 Captured with the 57mm

Everybody runs the 122mm in the KV-1 S, as the other gun is a bit sub-par compared with the KV-1 guns.

Good to know. I'll give the 122mm a try on my KV-1S, stick with the 85mm on the KV-1, and consider purchasing the Captured KV-1. Is the Captured KV-1 duel nation?

I'm running my KV-1 with derp too...Just pack a healthy dose of HEAT with you.

The 13. (Tiger) Kompanie, of Panzer Regiment Großdeutschland, reported on the performance of the 88 mm KwK 36 L/56, when their Tigers engaged the T-34: "First round hits were usually achieved at ranges between 800 to 1,000 meters. At these ranges, the Panzer Granate (they are referring to the PzGr. 39 APCBC ammunition) absolutely penetrated through the frontal armor, and usually still destroyed the engine at the rear of the T-34 tank. In 80 percent of the cases, shots from the same range hitting the side of the hull toward the rear of the tank resulted in the fuel tanks exploding. Even at ranges of 1,500 meters and longer, during favorable weather, it is possible to succeed in penetrating the T-34 with minimal expenditure of ammunition" (JENTZ, Thomas L.; Germany's TIGER Tanks - Tiger I and II: Combat Tactics; op. cit.).

I run my KV-1 with the 85mm as it is pretty reliable although I do put on the DERP sometimes. I run the KV-1S with the DERP most of the time though I have been known to stick the 85 on it at times. I have the CKV-1 for 57mm fun. The KV-1S with DERP is one of the only tanks that I get consistant satisfactory results using HEAT. For some strange reason all other tanks with HEAT I just cannot get the rounds to work worth a da_n.

I tested all 3 guns and decided that I prefer the 85mm.  The 57 is good too, but gets expensive.  The 122 is hilarious at tier 5, but too inconsistent for my taste.

If you want to be one of the 47 Ronin check out our recruitment post and then send a message to Prof935 (xbox) or dimka935 (ps4).

Good to know. I've had the same experience regarding HEAT. My M4A3E2 "Jumbo," when running the 105mm, had such abysmal results with HEAT, I would run strait HE. Same with the Pz.Kpfw IV(H). I've since stayed away from even loading it. Can't wait to give it a retry on the KV-1S.

I have moved away form using the Derp guns at Tier V.

Because the CKV-1 has the 57mm I thought I'd run the 85mm for variety, but ended switching to the KV-57M1 package as well. Now I just transfer the same crew back and forth for the Daily x2. The DPM is too good and, if I don't mind spending the silver, it handles higher tiers better with the APCR pen.

I could never make the 122mm on the KV-1S work for me. I tried it for a bit, but the reliability of the 85mm was what finally took me to my 2nd and 3rd MOE.

I'm arriving to the conclusion, as with everything else, results may vary. The main point was to see if purchasing the KV-57M1 package isn't a waste of silver. From experience in the T-34, the 57mm is a viable option. Likewise, the T-34-85 pulls in some very good games. So far, I've been doing very well in the KV-1 with the 85mm, it's when I see tier 7's, or get assaulted by light tanks, that it underperforms. We'll have to see, I only have a handful of battles in both tanks so far. They are addictive and very well balanced.

122m gun is great fun in KV-1S, I love it! :)

The T-34 with the 57mm imo is the only option about to put the third mark on mine just had a Radley's in it the other night chainsaw action.

Indeed! Same nations as the T-34-88 (Soviet and German)

Don't forget you can buy CKV-1 in War Stories for 1250 gold...This is the best deal in game, period!

I run the 85mm on the KV-1 as I have the Captured KV-1.  It's one of the few tanks that have more than one viable gun choice.  The 57mm is great when top tier as it will absolutely shred same and lower tier tanks, especially swarms of lights.  The 85mm is a better all-rounder IMHO and performs reasonably even when bottom tier.  I'm not really a Derp user so only run occasionally on some tanks (Panzer IVH and Jumbo Sherman) if needing certain achievements/damage awards.

So here’s an update. Been running the 57mm on the KV-1, It totally tears up equal and lower tier vehicles, filthy fun. My first two matches netted high caliber, top gun, and a first class mastery. Running the 122mm on the KV-1S is a mixed bag. When top tier on urban maps, it’s a curb stomping beast. The ability to one shot thin skinned vehicles is dirty fun. Seeing a red M24 Chaffee blown to smithereens, while rolling past, makes up for the not so fun matches. Wish the KV-1S had a 57mm package. Alternating between the Derp and 85mm gives good variety though.
