I recently started up the French TD line with the hopes of getting the Foch tier X.  Holy smokes, it has been a really hard grind.  I think the grind is worse than the Swedish TD grind.  I am currently on the ARL V39 (tier VI) and the suckage is mighty.  Does it get better?  Additional tips and pointers for an ok player would be appreciated.  I typically like to play up to tier X on lines and then move on to another line, so I am going to finish the French TD's.

It's a tough line as they are all very map-dependent as you have no armour and poor mobility, but it's all about the ability of the gun. That said the tier 8,  when you finally get the auto-loader, is very good.

3 MOEs - Nashorn, M36 Jackson, SU-100, S35CA, Matilda IV, Jagdpanzer IV, Archer, Wolverine, Achilles

2 MOEs - Type 58, Pzkpfw T25, WT Pz IV, JagdPanther, SU-100Y, Boilermaker, T20, IS-2, T-34-88, T25/2, Borsig, AMX AC 48, Charioteer, Plaguebringer, PzSflIVC, T67, SU-85

ARL 39 is a gem compared to the AC46. I unlocked the 8 but line seems to have little redeeming qualities. It is a bit of a brawler at 9 and 10. I want to play them all so not options to opt out of playing the good the bad and the ugly french.

Yup.

And it's why I urge people to do at least one other nation before the french.

It's a lot better now, with the upper TDs getting autoloaders. But it's still a horrible grind.

You will be out maneuver ed, out armoured, out sniped and out damaged by most other TDs.

The problem is, they would be much better off they didn't have atrocious french gun handling.

Glacial aim times, bad accuracy on auto loaders and massive weakspots that make any frontal armour they do have pointless.

I'm in the same stew as you, tier VI turd line. So far the best one was ''Bathtub'' and tier 3 UE57, since it has abnormally high camo rating, I believe it's highest in game overall and gun can pen any tier V no probs at all.

Lol, ''suckage is mighty''. :D

The 13. (Tiger) Kompanie, of Panzer Regiment Großdeutschland, reported on the performance of the 88 mm KwK 36 L/56, when their Tigers engaged the T-34: "First round hits were usually achieved at ranges between 800 to 1,000 meters. At these ranges, the Panzer Granate (they are referring to the PzGr. 39 APCBC ammunition) absolutely penetrated through the frontal armor, and usually still destroyed the engine at the rear of the T-34 tank. In 80 percent of the cases, shots from the same range hitting the side of the hull toward the rear of the tank resulted in the fuel tanks exploding. Even at ranges of 1,500 meters and longer, during favorable weather, it is possible to succeed in penetrating the T-34 with minimal expenditure of ammunition" (JENTZ, Thomas L.; Germany's TIGER Tanks - Tiger I and II: Combat Tactics; op. cit.).

3 MoE tanks: T-34, Pz IVH, Tiger I, Pz.Kpfw. T 25, M7, T-50

once I have finished the Chinese. I am planning on going back to the french again. Just to see if I appreciate them more now. CeeCertai I prefer the tier X Foch with the 120mm. Almost counters the terrible trolling by the 150

When you get to the AC 48, and if you have enough free XP to go directly to the last gun package with a 3 shots magazine, then you will be rewarded for your patience....

Stay at the Bathtub of Doom and start saving Free XP. Tier VI is a blight on the line. Both blind and underpowered. Saying that the S35 CA still needs its 400m view range back.

For Russ and the Allfather

Sadly here on console Foch 155 only has 6 degrees of gun arc which is no fun at all... tier 9 Foch has 10 degrees :(

I actually didn't mind up to and including the V39.  But I never got the AC46.  When I researched the AC46, the Bat Chat AP was introduced.  I like mediums much more than TD's so I moved it to there.  I had one more French crew that was intended to go into the AC46...but then the tier X lights were introduced.  That last French crew went back to the 13 90 to get the 13 105.

What does all this mean?

It means that WG needs some French crew trainers!

I train all my crews with the AMX Chaffee for the first four.

It is relatively fast if you play passive... obviously, not much fun, but still better than playing the FCM 36 PaK 40.

I agree we need a French Höllenhund.

Had great fun with the Tier IX Foch - only one upgrade path for engine & tracks. Great clip potential for 34 second reload, bouncy frontal armor if you wiggle when aimed at. Recently got the Foch itself when the Tier X sale kicked in but have not taken that for a spin. Expect the 2400 alpha with 32 second reload to cause more mayhem.

I prefer the 155mm on the Tier 10, but I firmly believe that if you play a tank without a turret you are at a disadvantage in the meta at the moment

I do not have the required crew qualification, but I am wondering if in certain situations, a good player cannot pivot the tank faster than a turret equipped TD; I am thinking about the Audace and the AMX 105 CDA;

I do not have time to play the Audace at present, but once I get to it, I will check.

the major weakness of the Audace is its low view range nominal value at 360 meters; This is a tank that always require Situational Awareness, Reckon; but it has +20o, which is unseen in this category...

Yes, all the grinds suck and are designed to extract money from you instead of doing them

The Higher Tiers are nice with their autoloaders, but Lower tier tanks can crush them because of their huge light bars on the top, is just a huge SHOOT ME HERE sign.
