Well they are what they are. They’re in the game and it is something to do. That being said I just wish there was more incentive. Right now I’m grinding a Merc tank for the sake of getting more Merc tanks. If that was their plan I guess I fell for it. I am afraid that when I’m done with my current contract that I’m probably going to just let them collect dust.

I just wish we could interact with them more with crews and countries we already have. I think the 10% free XP is a good idea just because of the number of tier 10 premiums. It gives people yet another reason to have them. Heck, make the tier 9-10 Merc tanks get 12 and 15% respectively. Just could have been so cool

This. They could have really been something different that aligned with the overall theme of the game (ie, Tanks from nations that didn’t have enough of their own for a tech tree). There were plenty of threads outlining multiple options for this.

Instead, we got frankentank abominations requiring overly-grindy, and oft-oddball objectives that wreck the meta and shift the population into limited tiers for long periods of time.

That’s what I thought WG would do. I was excited when the news was dropped that mercs were in the plans. I love the historical aspect of this game. The mercs wrecked that slightly. You’re on point with all you said.

Thanks. I’m not the only one that feels that way, but I’m often not afraid to be vocal about things like this. In this thread, others have stated similar opinions - I can’t take solo credit, but appreciate your remarks.

Every one of them should have giant weak spots where the different pieces were stuck together.

It strains even fantasy belief that a bunch of torch jockeys in a junkyard could weld together something even remotely close to the product of first world armor engineers and the dedicated manufacturing facilities used by national armies.

Especially all the stupid "spaced armor" add-ons. If that worked the miracles in real life that WoT credits it with every day, real tanks would be nothing but metal Matryoshka dolls.

Almost every Mercenary looks like it was coated in glue and buried in the recycling pile for a while.

Of course the idea is better than the current pointless state of the Mercs. So no chance to happen.

My idea is about the same but without choosing a single nation. The Mercs. should to be all nations trainers. Because - ya know: fight for whoever pays.

They also make many players act more stupid than they usually are because they are trying to do a contract and are all trying to do the exactly same thing at the exactly same time, so i wish they would stop issuing more contracts, and lets not forget the absolutely silly names of some of them, "Doggybag", "Bigwheel" or whatever.

but there are several tanks that have lots of added armor

the Super Pershing is actually a great example of a tank that has had  extra armor from other tanks welded to it.

"As such, Lt. Cooper chose a crude, but effective method of up-armoring the tank. Engineers salvaged an 80 mm (3.15 in) CHF (Cemented Hard Face) frontal plate from a destroyed Panther and welded it straight on to the mantlet. Holes were cut on the left and right of the gun so the gun sight and coaxial .30 cal machine gun could still be used. Additional, overlapping plates were also welded to the forward hull of the tank, creating a crude spaced armor. Later on, more armor, in the form of “ears”, was also attached to the mantlet plate. A large counterweight was also added to the rear of the turret bustle."

http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2/us/t26e4-super-pershing

" Since M26 was designed to fight the heaviest German armour, weak mantlet proved to be a big problem. It wasn’t able to stop the shells from 88 mm KwK 36 used on the Tiger I, not to mention 88 mm KwK43 from the Tiger II. The designers chose crude, but effective method. They welded additional 80 mm armor plate in front of the mantlet to increase its resilience. Original plate that was welded was salvaged from the destroyed Panther tank."

here are several tanks that had concrete as extra armor

They made everything much worser ... The meta, gameplay quality at hier tiers ... and - they are ugly as hell! Crew names and tank design are awkward.

i don’t mind them, if you don’t like’m don’t sign a contract. I’d like to see a merc tank line where the user would build their own tanks for the tier of contract we complete.

the tanks would have a point system so you would have to pick and choose what you really want and what you can do with out or less.

Eg. You could choose an amazing turret/gun for the tier but that would use up more points and then you might choose weaker armour and Mobility to fit the points in.  So you could decide the trade offs to suit your play style.

I think that this topic has been beaten to death but I am stage 7 of the Sharpshooter contract and it shall be my final contract since I have completed every single other contract and WG is not planning any more. Some of the Merc tanks are pretty good in my book. Others just all right, and of course they have a few stinkers in the bunch.

Rewards were good.

Most contracts are reasonably put together while some are indeed grindy, or have fairly difficult terms.

Didn't ruin the game for me. At times even made it more enjoyable and dare I say rewarding. I am looking forward to the freedom not having a contract comes with. I am certain that the contracts have improved my overall gameplay in certain tanks and classes. I sort of think that was part of the thinking behind how contracts were set up.

Nobody has to do a contract. And I guess I see the point that some contracts had some kind of effect on gameplay. But it is what it is.

I mean, modern tanks look more and more like legos. Stacking ERA on ERA.

I like them, I've got all but a handful and I enjoy the challenge of the contracts, it combines skill improvement with grinding new tank lines. I like the concept, though it probably could be expanded a bit more in their universe, like the suggestions already in this thread about crew training.

I agree that there's really only a few that are competitive; e.g. The Turtle, Tusk, Stinger, Cruncher, Ramrod, Stubbs, Chisel, Machine and probably the Plaguebringer, and then there are quite a few that I've not even bothered to play (Thresher, Bucket, Centrifuge). It's disappointing that there are a few lemons in there for something that was hard won.

I'd like to see module upgrades considered. Not as expansive as the tech tree, but let's just suggest an alternate package that's unlocked for a certain requirement, kind of like a continuation of the spirit of the contract to get the tank. For example, a likely upgrade for the Reach could be better reverse speed, which could be rewarded for 4x High Calibers in only that tank. These could be non visual buffs so no art resources would be needed, so it's just about balancing. It would also give me a reason to dust off least half of my merc collection.

Thinking about it, I would so grind my Slapjack to upgrade the gun handling and reload, like it had pre nerf.

Except each hit ruins that portion of the armor permanently...  It's so much different than life.  But the worst part is that spaced armor turns your Gunner into a complete idiot, as if he'd never heard of such a thing.

Want to color a reticle, do it for all armor based on damage chance, not if you can pierce a tinfoil out layer or not. Otherwise I wouldn't even have a color reticle in the game other than "on target or not"  if it were up to me.

No kidding.  Stubbs is on my list of clunkers.  On the other hand, the Thresher is positively OP when played well and the Centrifuge is solid.  The Bucket needs better rotation and it'd be OK.  The real dud is the Lawgiver.  Long Reach is a close second due to how slow and situational it is.
