If you are one of these players who will get a new generation console at launch, or as soon as available, or later when the quirks have been ironed out, chances are you are going to also upgrade your TV screen to make the most of them.

Not that a 1080p screen would not work, but if I invest in the next best thing, I want to make sure I get the most out of it.

What screen is the best to get in that context? it's not as easy as one may think.

OLED versus LED-LIT TVs?

OLED seemed to be the natural choice, in terms of visual quality, it is unbeatable. However, there is the so-called "Burn-in or permanent image retention" problem that goes with it. Also, OLED is less effective is you have your screen in a very bright room.

Also, OLED is an "LG" technology, they are the only one manufacturing OLED panels. Any other brand advertising "OLED" is using LG panel. Which makes the OLED choice more expensive.

HDMI 2.1:

The new standard has been defined, but not yet signed on. Therefore, manufacturer like Sony, while issuing a "made for gaming" model "X900H" (not saying buy Sony here), they indicate the HDMI 2.1 protocol will be updated whenever it has been released. Until then, you will not make full use of your new Xbox series X or PS5.

Apart from that, this is an easy choice; HDMI 2.0 is capped at 18 Gbps. HDMI at 48 Gbps. It does not mean that your Console or TV are capable of that speed though.

For  reference, 18 Gbps is good enough to carry a 4k signal at 60 fps with 8 bits color. Even when world of tanks upgrade to 60 fps, HDMI 2.0 will still be good enough. However, when color scheme improves to 12 bits, and resolution to 8K, or 120 fps then HDMI 2.1 will become compulsory.

Conclusion, if we leave out 8k, 2.1 will only become interesting once World of Tanks goes to 120 fps. Note that both consoles new generation are able to output at 120 fps, so we can figure that WoT will make use of that feature.

Another specification to check, is the number of HDMI ports supporting 2.1; to contain the price, some brands only offer one single HDMI 2.1 port. It should not be a great issue today, but in a few years from now, you may have a need for more.

Also, check out the speed of the HDMI ports; for example the LG CX series HDMI ports only go to 40 Gbps, not 48. Not a concern at present.

So, if you have a "dark" room, you really invest in OLED and the LG CX series seem to be the best choice at a hefty price.

In a "bright" environment, a traditional LED TV is more adequate; for example the Samsung Q90T is much brighter than the LG CX 2000 nits versus 700 nits.

I am not going to elaborate on the "convenience" specs, such as eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel), or ALLM (Automatic Low Latency Mode), there is plenty of information available around.

For Xbox Series X, the best choice is the LG CX series. Followed by LED TV's LG Nano and Samsung QT.

For PS5 players, the LG CX, but also the Sony Bravia X900H is said to be optimized for the PS5 generation.

Personally, I have not yet secured a PS5, but if I manage to be able to get one on Thursday, then I will most likely get a new TV too.

Anyone else projecting to get another display with a one of the new consoles?

Samsung Q9, Xbox One X, 1440p @60Hz.

The only thing missing is the new Xbox Series X.

Unfortunately there sold out probably won't be in stock for a week.

Xbox Series X, that arrived today. WoT looks way better now than with my 2014 Xbox One  even on my old 1080p TV and the loading times are Snakebite fast.

Can you tell me how you attempted to get one?

Since the PS5 will only be available online on the 12th, I will try to get one on order but I am not certain I will succeed.

Is it going to be turned on at 00:01 am on November 12th?

Considering the Xbox was faster than the PS4, I can only imagine how fast it is....

1080p TV's are good enough for today's World of Tanks. However, we can expect some improvements along the line, starting in December.

The announcement that crew vouchers are going to expire is like a clue big changes are coming.

I have a Sony 4k HDR which I purchased with my PS4 Pro.

If I manage a PS5, I will go X900H the cheapest one, 55". Unless I find a good deal for Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Craigslist,  I've seen them go from $600 to $1,000. I personally I'm patient and I'll just wait until it's available. Every retail store is out currently.

I don't think alot of people will upgrade their TV just because they buy the next gen console.  Those flashy new TVs run as much as or more than it would cost to build a PC.

That's why you should buy a good 4k HDR monitor(Mine was $600 on Amazon). Unless you're willing to pay the 3 to 4 grand for a TV you'll not find a TV that looks better than a monitor.

Here's a link to the monitor I have been using for the 1X and PS4 Pro.

I have a 6 y.o. Philips 1080p 65" and am looking to upgrade now even though I will be waiting to get the Series X for a while.

I was looking at the SONY KD65XH9077SAEP which claims to have 4K120 support, which I assume means 120hz?

Any thoughts?

There is absolutely now way I will indulge in scalpers' prices... if I can get one tomorrow I will, if I cannot, those that purchased consoles only to resale them at a profit will not go through me.

I will do like you. I will wait. No skin off my nose...

The burn in problem on affect OLED TVs, and the brands are now using software tricks to improve the life span. It is not as bad as initially, besides, it also depends on what you do with the TV.

Gamers who only play a certain game maybe more affected than others. I am one of them, only playing WoT at this time.

Sometimes, I leave my TV and Console on Garage view for long periods of time. e.g. I don't switch off, and I have not set a timer on either the TV or Console.

I have two consoles and a Samsung and a Sony TV. Not OLED though.

Agreed!

I am only getting one, if I manage a PS5, because I intend to keep my PS4s for the previous generation games. As I did with my 360. I have tens of games which I enjoy playing from time to time.

Hz does mean Hertz.

On Xbox you can switch between 60Hz @4K to 120Hz @ 1440p

So you could be right.

Would need more info on the TV.
