This has been on my mind for a while but haven't figured out how to word it. Most TDs and some other tanks have hull/turret lock and right now if you press left on the d-pad it turns off, but only in third person, once you go into first person aim mode the lock icon appears.

The real question is, what's the point of it being on and turning it off because it doesn't actually change anything.

while on nothing is different,

while off and nothing is different.

The only issue with tanks with locks is using them while they're aiming, then you're constantly re-adjusting your tank to move and hit targets to compensate for the lock.

So why can't we turn this on and off for real, instead of the useless on and off feature we currently have right now?

I am pretty sure there is a game setting which allows you to turn it off permanently (i.e make "hull lock" off by default).  That's what I have done and I play alot of turretless TD's and I don't experience the issue the OP is referring to.

(You can re-enable it for a specific battle using the controller if needed, but realistically once you know how to control without it, you will never turn it on again).

Not sure why would anyone want to play td's without hull-lock. Hull-lock is mandatory for td's and sometimes useful for artillery as well.

I've checked all the settings, and you can turn it "off" on the D-Pad but that doesn't actually turn anything off, and having it "on" doesn't mean anything either.

With hull lock off in third person, your tank won't change heading when you move your camera. However, if you lock on to a target,  your tank will point at the target, if you let go of the control stick.

You are right.  I got my "on's and off's" confused.  I always play with it on.

Wrong way around.

On locks vehicle rotation, Off will attempt to point the vehicle towards your target.

So why can't we turn this on and off for real, instead of the useless on and off feature we currently have right now?

When Hull lock is on - It prevents your hull from moving in 3rd person while you are aiming when your gun hits it's arc limits.

  • Default is on in 1st person as you lose perspective of your gun arc limits so you can easily hit the arc limit without knowing.

When Hull lock is off - Your hull will auto-rotate when you try to aim past your gun arc limits while in 3rd person.

When using 3rd person, you are either driving or in some type of close combat scenario where you want your hull to auto-rotate. Since TD's are snipers you are mostly in 1st person view when engaging and you don't want your hull to auto-rotate accidentally because you forgot to switch hull lock back to off after driving into position. This would quickly be a pain in the butt to remember to do every time you want to move your tank or have a light tank run up behind you and have to fumble with hull lock settings.

Why is this important? Concealment. If you rotate your hull, you are considered moving and lose your stationary concealment bonus, which often means you'll stand a great chance of being spotted. It prevents players from accidentally rotating their hull and cause their own death. So while in 1st person view, players have to manually rotate their hull to prevent accidental movements when hitting the gun arc limits. (This was even more important when the Camouflage Net deactivated during movement also)
