The KV-5 is a tier 8 Russian Premium tank. Unlike most other premium tanks, the KV-5 will never be added to the tech tree, but will instead only appear in special premium shop bundles, causing it to be a relatively rare tank. It is not however some "super-tank" that will crush all enemy competition before it, it has weaknesses and strengths just like all of the other tanks.

Basic Statistics

Pros:

  • All around strong armour (180/150/140 on the hull and turret)
  • Surprisingly fast for its size
  • Highest HP pool for its tier (1780)
  • Superior Damage-per-minute compared to the majority of its competition (2100)
  • Preferential matchmaking, only sees tiers 8-9
  • Good crew trainer
  • Good credit maker

Cons:

  • 4 extremely vulnerable weakpoints, one of which is available from every angle
  • The strong all around armour is completely flat, and is very vulnerable to the 220+ mm of penetration many tier 8 tanks get
  • 140 mm of rear armour is only part of the rear armour, there is a section that is only 90 mm thick
  • Terrible traverse speed—18 deg/s, the same as the T95
  • Gun only has 167 mm of penetration with AP rounds, 219 with APCR
  • Terrible 350 m view range

Now the question that will be running through many of your minds right now is whether or not it's worth buying this tank. And honestly, if what you're looking for is a tank that makes you a lot of credits, trains your crews effectively, and doesn't take a lot of effort, I really can't recommend this tank. The weakpoints are too vulnerable, and the gun is really bad. I would really recommend a different tier 8 premium instead, personally I think the Jagdtiger 88 is the best of the bunch, and I have a review of it here you may want to read instead.

What the KV-5 is good at, is being a lot of fun to play if you can deal with the low penetration on the AP round. It has a similar appeal to me as the TOG does, but at tier 8 instead. It looks very odd, and has the hilarity of being a 100 ton tank that reaches a maximum speed of 40 km/h, letting it ram quite effectively. It is also quite good at beating up on lower tiered tanks where its low penetration isn't so noticeable. In short, if you want a tank strictly to make credits with or train crews with, the KV-5 may be a bad choice, if you want a tank that is very fun to play, and still makes a reasonable amount of money, you might like the KV-5.

:teethhappy: I was fail-platooned into tier 10 once in my Jagdtiger 88, and got one-shot by a 183. Made me annoyed at our platoon member who had a Löwe instead of something with preferential matchmaking.

Great review Matthew.  Already decided against this tank due to it's obvious weak spots and ultra low penetration for a Tier 8 vehicle which can see Tier 9, but the review was well done either way.

Noob question if all premium tanks come with 100% crew, what's the point in the bonus crew trainer (do you transfer the crew that it came with to one of your other tanks?)

If i'm correct, the bonus crew xp can be applied to perks on the crew that came with the premium tank, or crews from other tanks of the same nation (which can be transferred to premium tanks for free).

100% is only beginning. You can always buy 80% crew for 100000 silver and make it 100% crew in 10, 20 or 30 battles, depending on how lucky you are. After that a very long grind for perks begins.

Premium tank crews are, generally speaking, useless, because one of the biggest advantages of premium tank is that you can put any other tank crew to premium tank for free. Premium tank trains crews a bit faster than non-premium. and you can use multiple premium tanks to train the same crew getting multiple x2 bonuses.

The only situation when premium tank needs own crew is when it is your only tank of the nation, and regular tanks of this nation are not yet available. It is a case right now for KV-5 (unless you have T127 already). You can buy KV-5, play it a lot, train perks for the crew, and when Russian line is here, move this crew to whatever Russian tank you want. It will cost you either about 1K gold or temporary loss of perks until you retrain your crew to 100% again.

Great review BTW :)

Works fine for me, and all there is is text inside, so I don't know what's going on with that. All the other spoiler menus worked fine?

In general, now that crew training exists getting a 100% crew with a premium tank is kind of pointless since retraining it on another tank for credits would set it to 80% and cost at the very least the same amount as training a new crew to 80%, but since there are no other non-premium Soviet tanks in the game, its nice to be able to start with a 100% crew.

Yeah, if we knew what russian tanks were being released first I probably would have noted that skilling the KV-5 in such and such way would be good because even though it might not work great on the KV-5, it would work well on X tank in the regular Russian line. For example, the listed skills might work okay for the KV-4 because it seems kind of similar to the KV-5 but not so much for the KV-1S maybe... *shrugs*

Thanks.

Right, but how many people who spent 9000 gold on a collectible tank, will hesitate too long to spend 10, 20 or 30 gold to retrain some perks?

If I could do it without spending 10 20 or 30 gold, I would prefer to do that...

Seems odd that specific spoiler doesn't work, but sure:

"The KV-5 as the first* Soviet tank available for purchase has two unique pieces of equipment you can purchase for it. The first is an equipment called Cyclone Filter which increases your engine hit points by 50%. Not really something worth buying for this tank in my opinion. The second is a consumable called "Removed Speed Governor" which, rather than being consumed every battle like 100-octane fuel is actually permanently attached to your vehicle (until you equip a different consumable of course). You can toggle it on/of just as you would activate a repair kit or first aid kit, and while it is active, it increases your engine power by 10% at the cost of damaging your engine over time. N.B. that the cyclone filter equipment does not counteract this effect.

*Yes, I know that the T-127 exists, but not all that many people have them, and they weren't available to buy singly.

The equipment that I selected for my KV-5 was a gun rammer, a vertical stabilizer and improved ventilation. The only other notable equipment choices were coated optics to counteract its low view range, a spall liner for ramming and artillery protection, and a tool box. However, I considered the coated optics to be a bad attempt to make up for a weakness as even with the optics the KV-5 still has a bad view range. It seemed better to maximize what the tank was good at, in this case its damage-per-minute. The spall liner seemed unnecessary as the KV-5 is extremely effective at ramming because its large weight means that the enemy tank receives the majority of the potential damage from the ram, and the other pieces of equipment just seemed better. The tool box was unnecessary because I immediately trained repairs on my crew. It would be a good piece of equipment to have while training repairs however, as being tracked is not good for you.

I also decided to try out the removed speed governor, and I had some success with it. It's nice to be able to get a bit more power out of your engine when going uphill and when you really need to get somewhere fast. Make sure you don't leave it on for too long though as it will eventually break your engine, and the KV-5 with a broken engine is horrifically slow. Also keep in mind that the removed speed governor does increase your repair cost by damaging your engine, so while it may be "free" to keep from game to game, it isn't free to use."

Slightly peripheral question, Matthew, but since I also do not want to spend 9000 on some experiment, may be you know the answer to that:

Suppose I have T-127 and KV-5. I can freely transfer crews between them. Will tier 3 crew train with the same speed on KV-5 and T-127? Will tier 8 crew train with the same speed on own tank and tier 3 tank?

If speed is the same, it makes sense to buy a lot of cheap low tier premiums to accelerate training of some high tier crews with x2 bonuses. On the other hand, if high tier premium tank trains low tier crews faster (because it earns a lot more XP), one tier VIII can provide enormous boost to the whole nation (like Russians when they are here).
