No, I think it was first the Panther (Pz V), if I'm not mistaken. Then the Tiger (Pz VI) as the Pz IV succesor.

The Tiger was in service alongside Pz. IV's a year before the Panther entered service and began to replace the Pz. IV. Began is key word there as, by the end of the war, roughly 6000 Panthers had been built compared to the roughly 8,500 Pz. IV's that had been built. The Tiger wasn't supposed to replace the Pz. III and Pz. IV, it wasn't fast enough. It was supposed to be the breakthrough tank that would allow the Pz. III's and IV's to rush forward and exploit the gaps made by the Tigers. The Panther then replaced the Pz. III and IV in the MBT/gap exploitation tank.

I write things, things which can be found in Historical Discussions. Things like this article on the Soviet invasion of Manchuria in 1945 and this article on the Spanish Civil War.

"Logical" Germany introduces the Pz. VI a year before the Pz. V.
