Hello, It's Aschenblume again with my fifth guide to help new players learn a new thing or two about an amazing machine. Let's get started!

Tiger's History :

Tiger I  is the common name of a German heavy tank developed in 1942 and used in World War II. The final official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen VI Tiger Ausf. E, often shortened to Tiger. The Tiger I gave the Wehrmacht its first tank which mounted the 88 mm gun in its first armoured fighting vehicle-dedicated version: the KwK 36. During the course of the war, the Tiger I saw combat on all German battlefronts. It was usually deployed in independent heavy tank battalions, which proved highly effective.

While the Tiger I has been called an outstanding design, it was over-engineered, using expensive materials and labour-intensive production methods. Only 1,347 were built between August 1942 and August 1944. The Tiger was prone to certain types of track failures and breakdowns, and limited in range by its high fuel consumption. It was expensive to maintain, but generally mechanically reliable. It was also difficult to transport, and vulnerable to immobilization when mud, ice and snow froze between its overlapping and interleaved Schachtellaufwerk-pattern road wheels in both rasputitsa and succeeding winter weather conditions, often jamming them solid. In 1944, production was phased out in favour of the Tiger II.

The tank was given its nickname "Tiger" by Ferdinand Porsche, and the Roman numeral was added after the later Tiger II entered production. The initial official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen VI Ausführung H (‘‘Panzer VI version H’’, abbreviated PzKpfw VI Ausf. H), with the H being for the designer/manufacturer, Henschel. It was classed with ordnance inventory designation SdKfz 182. The tank was later redesignated as PzKpfw VI Ausf. E in March 1943, with ordnance inventory designation SdKfz 181.

Today, only a handful of Tigers survive in museums and exhibitions worldwide. The Bovington Tank Museum's Tiger 131 is currently the only one restored to running order.

There were two versions of the Tiger in the game a long time ago. The "pre-buff", before the tank was improved, was not a very good machine. Big, boxy, and mediocre gun performance; made the Tiger one of the more inferior heavy tanks at tier VII. Post-buff however has greatly improved the tank's performance; the 8,8 cm Kw.K. 43 L/71 on the Tiger was greatly buffed bringing the rate of fire to an amazing 8.96 r/m (~6.7sec). Tiger was also given a HP (health pool) buff from 1450 -> 1500.

Most people join the game because there is a Tiger in the game. "OH WOW! A Tiger I want to drive it, I'll be able to kill everything!", is the usual reasoning of these players. It was even my reason to pick up the game when I saw it some four years ago when the game came out, for PC that is. When I got my hands on it I was quickly slapped into reality. The Tiger is not a "kill all, take all" heavy, which means you CANNOT go blundering around the map, thinking that the Tiger's armor will sort everything out. The Tiger isn't fighting M4 Sherman tanks from 1-2 miles away, the Tiger is fighting tanks that were designed to destroy the Tiger. And it will do that! Tiger is not much of a frontline heavy, it's more of a support and or sniping heavy.

I will be REALLY clear about this, I said "Sniping and support" heavy; NOT "hide-behind-your-arty" heavy. Tiger should be moving with the battle and not be left behind it, otherwise you wont be of much use and plus, it isn't very fun to be doing nothing.

With that being said, let's look at the pros of this tank.

  • 1500HP (The most of the tier VII heavies, as much as the IS-3)
  • Amazing 8,8 cm Kw.K. 43 L/71
  • Tough mantlet
  • Good topspeed (40KpH)
  • Can sidescrape effectively

What If I want to play as a Frontline heavy?

It is no easy task I will tell you that, this playstyle is somewhat unforgiving to new players, it takes alot of experience and situational awareness to do well in. The Tiger's amazing gun allows it to eat most tanks on the battlefield, for every shot they fire at you; you will be able to fire two right back at the foe. The T29's reload is around 11secs and the IS is 12secs. Try and bait the enemy into firing and be sure to be the one in control of the conflict. YOU dictate the engagement. Tiger is not a very good lone wolf, you really want the support of your allies as the Tiger isn't very threatening alone, and most likely would get rushed and overran. Stick with the much more "heavier" heavy tanks and be the annoying thorn in the enemies backside.

A good example I like to make of the Tiger is that it is like a French light, in that it becomes more deadly the longer the game progresses. Keeping the Tiger alive is a great way to ensure damage, kills, and more importantly, victory!

Sidescarping & Angling Tutorial :

Effective Angling

Look familiar? Angling the Tiger is one of the MOST important tips I can give you. Angling is useful now and it will be to the Tiger II, the E75, and E100 as well as most non-nosepiked tanks.

Sidescraping allows you to bounce, deflect, and absorb potential damage; and be able to effectively fight back while doing it. Best way to do this is as the diagram explains. Find and builiding or large obstacal, park along it and start moving back and forth. This will result in bounces, track damage, tracking, but no actual damage.

WARNING - This is not fool proof and will not always work according to plan as there are unknown factors, but it is the best way to engage around a corner or obstacle.

Tiger does come with its Cons as all tanks do.

  • Relatively weak and unsloped armor gives it poor protection compared to other tier 7 heavies, and worse than some mediums
  • Large lower glacis is easily hit and leads to transmission damage, sides have huge hitboxes for the ammunition rack
  • Rather slow aim time
  • Atrocious turret traverse
  • Susceptible to module and crew damage due to bad armor combined with high HP

A quote from the WarGaming Wiki :

"this tank is a complete gem to players who like a cautious, supportive play style, and should be played as such. However, many players run through this tank to get to the Tiger II without proper knowledge and experience, and these players tend to give this tank a bad reputation. Make no mistake, the Tiger (H) is a formidable tank once the player works out the unique style of the tank."

Suggested Equipment :

  • Tank Gun Rammer
  • Improved Ventilation
  • Gun Laying Drive
  • Coated Optics

I do recommend that you train your crew for the repairs perk as soon as possible.

I hope this is helpful for new Tiger drivers out there. I hear a fellow former Pepsi and Lies might be posting a similar thread about the Tiger, and if he does I will post the link on here.

Please, If you have any questions please ask and me or the other helpful formers here will help you. I will be routinely looking over this thread and the other guides I have made.

Good Luck Tankers!

Fair warning, like most stock tanks, the Tiger I SUCKS stock.

Main problem with the stock Tiger is the engine is too small, so you are really, really slow (not quite stock Hetzer slow, but close).

Other problem is the stock gun is terrible, and basically useless when you get put into a Tier 9 match.

The Tiger doesn't really get its claws till the final package.  Once you unlock the final package its a beast, but until then you are more hunted than hunter.

I hated this tank because it was so immobile

I know it recently got a Mobility buff(recent like, 4-5 updates ago, late 2015??) - is it a significant mobility buff, or just a minor one?

It was a fairly big buff to its mobility. The Tiger now has mobility comparable to Tier 8 mediums.

Very significant. Its is similar to a tier 8 medium at tier 7.

It is not very agile but fast in a straight line.

It now goes 40KPH not 30.

Again SgT Becket FEAR is a Huge Tiger fan. He has far more experience in it than me. I mainly covered the basics.

I sold my Tiger a while back, actually got to the Tiger 2 and then sold it as well for mostly the same reasons.

Slow(it was stock) and boring gameplay

I dont think I'll be running that line ever again, except for the VK 360 which is fun, because the 9/10 tanks are slow and immobile, looking to have much the same playstyle

I will, however, grind past the Panther/Panther 2, because the E50/M look really fun

Ah, gotcha :)

Honestly, I don't necessarily enjoy the E-100 line past the Tiger I :/ Just not my preferred playstyle <shrug>

yeah, the E75 and E100 just looked too Maus-y to me in that they are all armor, no speed, and therefore not particularly fun for an aggro-playstyle Tanker like me

I can't (and WON'T) sit in the back of the map, and I refuse to spend TOG-length amounts of time just driving to a battle

Yeah -_-

The E-100 is my only Tier 10 but I cannot stand using it just because of how boring it is to drive around in a tank that looks and moves like a freaking house. Plus, when I mess up, it is like dying in slow motion because of how long it takes for the Reds to kill me -_-

Personally, I'm grinding for the E-75 (i'm at the Tiger II), but I'm keeping my Tiger I "Lotti" in the garage permanently. It's one of my favorite tanks to play. Gonna try to get my second MOE on it after my E-75 grind.

Never underestimate the stopping power of a tree.
